This is a custom made "Night Guard" which is reinforced with steel mesh and made of very durable heat and pressure processed acrylic. It is worn on the lower teeth at night to help prevent  tooth grinding or " Bruxism" which can damage teeth.

The stainless steel mesh is embedded deeply in the acrylic to add strength & durability. A Night Guard must withstand strong biting forces. Orthodontic Retainers are differently designed, are much thinner, and often destroyed by " Bruxism ".
